I wonder if UA will disable certain functionality and apps on these iPads. The last thing we need in-flight is an “angry bird” at the helm of the airplane.
The iPad will be packed with flight charts, equipment manuals, and in-flight WiFi in a 1.6lb package, which is being referred to as an “electronic flight bag”. Aeronautical navigational charts will be replaced by an iPad app called Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck, which features data-driven enroute navigation information and worldwide geo-referenced terminal charts. “The paperless flight deck represents the next generation of flying,” said Captain Fred Abbott, United’s senior vice president of flight operations. “The introduction of iPads ensures our pilots have essential and real-time information at their fingertips at all times throughout the flight.”
